Safety Care
We offer a two-day Verbal and Physical De-escalation Combo Training, one-day Verbal De-escalation ONLY Training, and one-day Re-Certification Training. See below for training descriptions and registration links.
- Please obtain your site administrator's approval prior to registering for these training.
- Training will be held from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm in Bungalow 2 at the Office of Pupil Services located on 727 Golden Gate Avenue.
- Training begin promptly at 8:30 am. If you are more than 15 minutes late you will be unable to certify and will need to re-register for a future training.
- You are required to attend the full day of training, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, to be able to certify. For any questions about this please contact us directly.
- During the training, please wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
Breakfast will be available but lunch will not be provided.
- There is only 2-hour permit or metered street parking available in the neighborhood. Please take public transportation and carpool if possible.
- If you are waiting for your sub to arrive at your site, please notify the Office of Pupil Services (415-241-3030) so we may determine if there will be adequate time to catch you up.
Substitute coverage will be available for these training. For Certificated staff, we can only provide subs for Classroom Teachers and for Classified staff, we can only provide subs for Paraprofessionals, except N10 paras. Sub request information is due 3 1/2 weeks prior to the event. You can request a substitute on the google registration form, and the exact due date for sub requests will be posted on the form.
Verbal and Physical De-escalation Combo:
Please note: This is a TWO-DAY training, and you must attend both days.
The safety care Behavioral Safety Training program provides the skills and competencies necessary to effectively prevent, minimize, and manage behavioral challenges with dignity, safety, and the possibility of change. Using the newest and most effective technologies from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS), this Safety Care program will provide your staff with strategies for not only preventing and managing behavioral challenges, but also to effectively teach replacement behaviors. Safety Care trainings provide the tools you need to be safe when working with behaviorally challenging individuals.
Training includes:
- Understanding how and why crisis events happen and ways in which we can identify challenging behaviors.
- Preventing crises using a variety of supportive intervention strategies.
- Applying simple, evidence-based de-escalation strategies that are effective for any population.
- Responding appropriately and safely to dangerous behavior.
- Preventing the need for restraint.
- Learn non-harmful physical crisis intervention techniques.
Please note that Verbal De-escalation is a prerequisite to Physical De-escalation. You must take the Verbal portion before you can take the Physical portion.
Participants must demonstrate competency in both verbal and physical assessments for both certifications requirements.

Please note: If you would like to be certified in our Physical De-escalation training, you have 90 days after participating in Verbal De-escalation to register for the Physical training. If you do not register for the Physical training within 90 days, you will have to re-take the Verbal De-escalation training before you can take the Physical De-escalation training.

Physical De-escalation ONLY:
Please note that Verbal De-escalation is a prerequisite to register for the Physical De-escalation training. After you complete the Verbal training, you need to register for the Physical training within 90 days. If it is after the 90-day period, you must re-take the Verbal training before you can register for the Physical.
The Physical De-escalation ONLY training focuses more on teaching, practicing, and applying reactive strategies to manage challenging behaviors safely through the implementation of non-harmful physical crisis intervention techniques.
Training includes:
- Understanding how and why crisis events happen and ways in which we can identify challenging behaviors.
- Preventing crises using a variety of supportive intervention strategies.
- Applying simple, evidence-based de-escalation strategies that are effective for any population.
- Responding appropriately and safely to dangerous behavior.
- Preventing the need for restraint.
- Learn non-harmful physical crisis intervention techniques
Participants must demonstrate competency in both verbal and physical assessments to complete the certification requirements. Please remember to bring your Safety Care training manual with you.
There are no more Physical De-escalation ONLY training for SY 2019-2020.
Re-certification:
The re-certification training is suitable for staff members who have been trained in the full Safety Care modules. It is a 6 hour training, and it has to be taken every year by Safety Care certified staff members. The re-certification training reviews the main competencies learned during the full safety care training.
Please note: Certification lasts for 1 year from the first date of your previous training. There is a 3 month "grace period" where you may still recertify, but may not use the procedures. Following this grace period, you will need to sign up for the 2-day Verbal and Physical De-escalation Combo Training instead of the Re-certification Training.
